1863 Marsala Express is a strategic railway and investment game set in the very South of Italy, where 1 to 5 players build networks, invest in competing companies, manage trains and compete for the most profitable routes.
It is rooted in the classic 18xx tradition, but designed to be easier to get to the table and be played well at two players or solo, thanks to a robust Automa system with adjustable difficulty.
Two games in one. Play the full 1863 Marsala Express, or switch to the classic 1850 junior for a shorter experience. And when the trains start running, forget fiddly calculations: revenues, dividends and payments are all multiples of 10.
1863 – Marsala Express is more than a railway game: it puts you in the role of a 19th-century investor as Sicily and Calabria are transformed by rail, trade and industry. The lucrative Marsala wine trade is part of that story, helping shape investment and route-building decisions.
The game is designed to keep you focused on strategy rather than bookkeeping. Turns flow cleanly, and revenues, dividends and payments are all multiples of 10, reducing calculations without removing meaningful financial decisions.
The Automa system makes 1863 equally compelling solo or with two players. It creates real competition, can be adjusted in difficulty, and lets you learn the game gradually before facing a more demanding opponent.
The map is also a major part of the challenge. Crossing the Strait of Messina links Sicily and Calabria and can become a key strategic objective. Ports are equally important: routes reaching them gain a 50% revenue boost, reflecting the island’s dependence on maritime trade.
Cities such as Palermo, Catania, Messina and Reggio Calabria use variable tiles, so the network develops differently from game to game. This makes each session feel fresh and encourages new approaches.
